Have you ever wanted to meet a Nobel Laureate and ask him nearly any
question that piques your curiosity? Did you know yeast not only makes
great Sam Adams beer, but is also being used in the research of cancer
and biofuels? What about neuronal enhancement drugs - do they really
make your smarter? What will you look like as you age?
Curious?
Then come to the Cambridge Science Festival and find out! Enjoy nine
days and more than 200 public events showcasing Cambridge as an
internationally recognized leader in science and technology. The
festival is a multifaceted, multicultural event modeled on art, music
and movie festivals - and it promises to make science accessible,
interactive and fun! Still curious?
What the heck is a science festival, anyway?
Science
festivals are public celebrations that offer a wide range of science
and technology-related activities - creative exhibitions,
demonstrations, performances, tours, debates, workshops, concerts -
over a periods of several days, in a variety of locations.
When will it be held this year?
April 26 through May 4, 2008
Where is this crazy festival being held?
All over Cambridge! Our opening carnival will be held at City Hall on
Mass Ave (from noon till 4:00 on April 26th) and then more than 200
events will be held in various venues across the city. Please check
out our schedule and map of venues at www.cambridgesciencefestival.org
Why do we need a science festival?
Cambridge is a "science city" of international distinction, home to
numerous academic and commercial institutions that are heavily invested
in science and technology. Yet much of Cambridge's science and
technology is unknown to those who are not professionally involved. The
festival reveals Cambridge's hidden science treasures, engages and
educates the general public, and sparks curious minds to explore the
internationally prominent discoveries taking place in our own backyard.
So what would I actually do at this festival?
Well,
at different events you'll do different things. At some events, like
plays and concerts, you'll sit, watch, and be entertained. But at most
events you'll be participating, creating, and interacting. This is not
show and tell... it's show and do!
Is the Cambridge Science Festival for kids? Families? Teens?
It's for everyone! There are some programs specifically for kids and
families, some just for teens and some just for adults. Please visit www.cambridgesciencefestival.org for a complete list of events.
I smell a field trip! Can I bring my class?
Absolutely! We would love to have your class at the festival. Just be
sure to check to see if reservations are required due to space
limitations.
Is it free or do I have to pay?
The Cambridge Science Festival's opening day Science Carnival on April
26th at Cambridge City Hall is totally free and open to the public!
Most of the other events are also free, including a brown bag lunch
with a different Nobel Laureate each weekday, one-on-one sessions to
learn how to create your own blog, and the chance to be an astronomer
for a day with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the
MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. There are
some events that include a nominal fee, usually for the materials to
build a rocket or to put on a high quality theater production.
How do I get there?
Most of the events are accessible by public transportation. Please see the map of venue at www.cambridgesciencefestival.org
for exact locations. There is limited parking throughout Cambridge,
including public lots in Kendall, Central, and Harvard Squares.
What should I bring?
Your curiosity!!
