Supporting the Arts PDF Print E-mail
ImageCambridge has a long history of supporting creative arts, and Marjorie has continually demonstrated her support of the arts despite multiple occasions when funding cuts have been threatened by city government. Arts and music help keep Cambridge a diverse community and attract rising stars in a variety of fields. Cambridge is a better city because of the contribution of those at Club Passim, the Brattle Theater, the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center and many others.

Here are a few things that she has been working on:

When the Cambridge City Council cut the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center’s funding, Marjorie worked to restore those funds and demand transparent accountability in the council budget process that unfairly cut these funds.  That year, children’s summer art classes and a Children of Iraq art exhibit were at stake.

In honor of the 47th anniversary of the Club Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center, Marjorie worked closely with the club owners and the surrounding community to raise funds for a special concert. A year before the event, Marjorie hosted a luncheon of community business leaders, Harvard University and the Cambridge School Department to help those leaders to become reacquainted with Club Passim, and to build financial support for future collaborative, educational projects.

Marjorie was approached by the Brattle Theater to help brainstorm support for the presentation of film and programming at the theater. At their request, Marjorie worked closely with both Ned and Ivy, owners of the theater, and hosted a luncheon of potential supporters at the Charles Hotel.

Over the last two years, Marjorie worked closely with the Underground and Nora Theater to identify new supporters and contributors.  She also helped to secure Matt Damon as a guest speaker at their successful fundraiser this past year.

Marjorie is currently working with the New England Music Organization (NEMO) and the Boston Music Awards to help create a new home for that non-profit organization in Cambridge.

Marjorie also advocates for a permanent Arts Walk on the Cambridge Common so that local artisans can showcase their work and have a market to sell their crafts.  In addition, she is currently helping to establish the Farmer’s Market, which is also open to local artisans.
