Having grown up as the daughter of a nurse’s aide who was a shop steward for her union, Marjorie knows the important role that unions play in our community. When the union was forced out of her mother’s work place, the pay decreased and the working conditions deteriorated. She will continue to be a strong advocate for the rights of workers in our community.
Having grown up as the daughter of a nurse’s aide who was a shop
steward for her union, Marjorie knows the important role that unions
play in our community. When the union was forced out of her mother’s
work place, the pay decreased and the working conditions deteriorated.
She will continue to be a strong advocate for the rights of workers in
our community.
Here are a few things that she has been working on:
Marjorie worked closely on the Harvard Living Wage campaign, raising awareness on the critical issue of ensuring workers receive a fair salary that allows them to lead a dignified life. She felt passionately that workers who are employed at a full-time job must receive adequate compensation. Marjorie enlisted public support of two childhood friends -Ben Affleck and Matt Damon- who have connections to Harvard and can command a world stage, to make a real difference for Harvard workers.
When two workers were fired unfairly by R&C Cleaning, Marjorie called for and held a hearing on the firing and other Unfair Labor Practices that were filed against the company. There were numerous allegations of surveillance, intimidation, and threats to workers who were attempting to organize. Marjorie also called on the President of Genzyme, which contracts to R&C Cleaners, to support the janitors right to organize.
In March, Marjorie held a hearing focusing on the efforts of Cambridge Brands workers to organize, investigating dubious and possibly illegal actions by the company. In an effort to silence the workers, the Cambridge Board informed workers that they would have to work mandatory overtime. On that same day they made this announcement to their workers, they were expected to testify before the City Council. Marjorie showed her support of the workers by leaving the Council meeting and then traveling to the work site to speak directly with the workers on their break.
