A Healthy and Affordable Cambridge for Homeowners PDF Print E-mail
ImageMarjorie has made affordable housing a hallmark of her time in public service, balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders to ensure that Cambridge remains an environmentally friendly and affordable community with open space and economic development. As a product of public housing herself, Marjorie understands the importance of providing affordable alternatives for families of varying socio-economic backgrounds so that Cambridge maintains its diversity and culture.

Here are a few things that she has been working on:

Marjorie was the lead negotiator in mediating between Harvard University and the Riverside community at the Mahoney site. As a result of her efforts, Harvard will deed open space on the riverfront with close to a million dollars for design and landscape. In addition, Harvard will develop 60 units of affordable housing that will be owned by the city.

Marjorie was the only City Councilor to publicly voice support for additional affordable housing at Trolley Square.

Marjorie has sponsored several Council orders to ensure that affordable housing opportunities are available to low income families and seniors, including an order that asked the Cambridge Housing Authority and Community Development Department to work with individuals affected by Section 8 budget cuts.

Though Cambridge has one of the lowest residential property tax rates in the state, the recent decision by the state government to force Cambridge to assess properties at 100% hit owners hard and unfairly. Marjorie is pushing for a sensible property tax policy that gives residents predictability in planning for their taxes. It is impossible for our residents to own a home when taxes go up over 100% in a year, so Marjorie has proposed limiting future property tax increases by 3-5%. If owners sell their property, the City would reassess the value to determine the tax base on the new owner.

Marjorie has been working to create a policy that provides more Limited Equity Cooperative opportunities for Cambridge residents.
